Renew first, then deal with the ticket
If your tags are still expired, renew the registration before your court date and keep the receipt. That is the first thing Joel Hancock tells anyone who calls about one of these, and it is worth doing whether or not you hire a lawyer.
Bringing proof of renewal to court matters. What the district attorney and the judge do with it is their call, and nobody can promise you a particular result. But walking in having already fixed the problem is a materially different conversation than walking in having not.
Two different charges, and the difference is worth knowing
People say “expired tags” as if it is one offense. G.S. 20-111 actually contains two, and they do not have the same elements.

That willfulness element in subsection (2) is not decoration. A renewal notice that went to an old address, a tag that was renewed but where the sticker never arrived, a vehicle recently bought or borrowed, a registration the driver reasonably believed was current: these go to whether the State can prove the charge as written. It is the first thing worth looking at on the citation.
What a conviction actually costs
- The fine. Capped at $200 for a Class 3 misdemeanor unless another statute says otherwise.
- Court costs. Set by statute and paid to the court on top of the fine. These are often larger than the fine itself.
- The record. This is the part people do not expect. It is a misdemeanor conviction, and it shows up on a background check run by an employer or a landlord.
- Missing court. Failing to appear turns a manageable citation into a failure to appear, which can bring an order for arrest and a DMV license revocation under G.S. 20-24.1.
Where the case is heard
Carteret County has one courthouse and it is in Beaufort.
